LIGHTS OUT (2013)
Dir: David F Sandberg
Starring: Lotta Losten
Here’s something to help you see in the weekend in creepy-style, an
award-winning, dialogue-free, two-minute horror short that will absolutely
TERRIFY you!
This garnered quite a bit of mainstream media attention a while ago,
including a story on the Daily Mail online. I completely understand why.
Dive in.
SUMMARY: As this is
very, very short, I won’t spoil too much. It is basically the story of a young
woman, home alone on a dark, stormy night (aren’t they all????).
As bedtime approaches, she thinks she spots something in her hallway.
Something sinister…
WHY IT WORKS: This short embraces so many horror tropes that it could
almost be a pastiche… if they weren’t all utilised to perfection.
Using
the age-old fear of what may be lurking within the dark, along with artful
direction from the superb David F Sandberg (a man whose short films have bagged
award after award, for VERY good reason) this film is like an old campfire
horror story. It uses a simple location, technically immaculate camera work and
a superb use of sound (all about those running footsteps, YIKES!) to scare the living daylights out of even the most hardened of horror fans.
DIALOL: None at all, this passes without a word being
spoken.
SO WHERE’S IT AT? Well the lazy among you can watch it right
here!
However,
please do visit David F Sandberg’s official web site here or his vimeo channel here. Both are full of links and information to even more of his fantastic
work. There are enough treasures there to keep you busy for a long time.
10 WORD WRAP UP: Two minutes of fantastically shot and legitimately
terrifying bedtime horror
