ALL THE WEEK'S HORROR HEADLINES (21st-28th September)

Not got time to trawl the web for all the top horror news of the last week? Well allow me to give you a bite-size breakdown of the all biggest nightmarish news!

1. CLIVE BARKER'S WEAVEWORLD COMING TO TV

Horror legend Clive Barker (the man whose fiction brought us the stories behind Hellraiser and Candyman to name but two) is producing his epic dark fantasy novel Weaveworld for TV station the CW (home of Supernatural and Arrow). 

It's an awesome book, so I can't wait to see what comes of this.

2. ALIEN: PARADISE LOST AND TWO MORE PROMETHEUS SEQUELS

Ridley Scott has revealed that there could be as many as THREE sequels to Prometheus!

Asked by German site FilmFutter whether he would answer the hanging questions from Alien, Scott said:

“Yes, but it won’t be in the next one. It will be in the one after this one or maybe even a fourth film before we get back into the ‘Alien’ franchise… The whole point of it is to explain the Alien franchise and to explain the how and why of the creation of the Alien itself. I always thought of the Alien as kind of a piece of bacterial warfare. I always thought that that original ship, which I call the Croissant, was a battleship, holding these biomechanoid creatures that were all about destruction."

Oh, and the next film has been officially titled Alien: Paradise Lost!

3. E4 LANDS SCREAM QUEENS FOR UK

UK readers, heard good things about Ryan Murphy's Scream Queens and want to know how you can catch it?

Wonder no longer, as E4 has issued a press release stating that it'll be airing the series this Autumn!

4. FRIGHTFEST PRESENTS LINE-UP ANNOUNCED

On October 19th Icon Film Distribution and FrightFest team up to launch FRIGHTFEST PRESENTS, an 'all-new expert driven social community-building label ready to deliver true shocks and scares straight into your home just in time for Halloween and beyond...' FrightFest Presents offers viewers a selection of films from the festival; hand-picked by FrightFest directors Alan Jones and Paul McEvoy. 

The first phase of six films from FRIGHTFEST PRESENTS will be available to download from October 19 and are: The Sand, Estranged, After Death, Aaaaaaaaah!, Night of the Living Deb and Some Kind of Hate.

5. WATCH DOLL BOY NOW!

How many of you remember my review for awesome short film Doll Boy last year?

You know, this one. 

Well the very kind 'Bloody' Bill Pon (director of Doll Boy and the long-awaited Circus of the Dead — stay tuned for more on that!) has been generous enough to put the entire film online for your pleasure! What a guy!

6. NEW RELEASES

The BIG one this week for those who missed it — season five of arguably the biggest genre show of the past decade, The Walking Dead. It's good. VERY good.

1. DAVID LYNCH BACK ONBOARD FOR TWIN PEAKS

Praise the Lord! The Powers-That-Be have seen sense and made a deal with David Lynch to get the new series of Twin Peaks running again. Lynch himself confirmed this on his Twitter feed.

2. WOLF CREEK 3 AND 28 MONTHS LATER ARE COMING

Wolf Creek star John Jarratt has confirmed that the third instalment in the Outback horror franchise should start shooting next year. I'm a big fan of the legitimately gruelling exploits of Mick Taylor, so this is welcome news indeed!

Also, Alex Garland, co-creator of 28 Days Later has revealed that he came up with a story for a sequel, 28 Months Later, which WILL be moving forward. Will it feature more Paris based carnage a la the end of 28 Weeks Later? Stay tuned!

4. SONY FINDS HELMER FOR THE CRAFT REMAKE

Sony has approached writer/director of the critically acclaimed Honeymoon, Leigh Janiak to reboot 1996's cult smash hit, The Craft. She will co-write with Phil Graziadei, who worked with Janiak on Honeymoon.

1. DETAILS RELEASED ON NEW HALLOWEEN MOVIE

There's FINALLY a new Halloween movie on the way!
It‘s being described as a 'recalibration' rather than a remake or reboot (I’ve no idea what that means, either), but most exciting, it's being written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunston, the creative team behind several of the Saw movies and The Collector/Collection!

2. NEW LEADS ANNOUNCED TO BATTLE THE EVIL DEAD ALONGSIDE ASH

Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo have been cast to co-star with horror legend Bruce Campbell in Starz’s Ash vs Evil Dead. It seems that the showrunners are adding some younger eye-candy to work with Campbell, but, as long as they‘re 'Groovy’, I’m down with that!

3. RESIDENT EVIL HD REMAKE SETS NEW RECORDS

Capcom have announced that the new Resident Evil HD Remaster is the fastest selling digital download in the company’s history in both Europe and North America. 
I’ve not polayed the game yet, but I've heard nothing but good things about the latest (oldest?) outing from the king of Survival Horror.
Seems there’s still life in the undead after all. Now how about an RE2 Remaster?

4. BLOMKAMP’S ALIEN ONE STEP NEARER TO REALITY?

Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9 and Elysium, may get the chance to make his dream Alien movie after all! After sharing a tonne of concept art earlier this year (most of it very, very cool indeed!), it seems Fox are keen to sit down and listen to his ideas. Whether this would come to fruition after Ridley Scott’s Prometheus sequel, remains to be discovered, but Blomkamp has already shown real sci-fi vision, so this is one to watch out for!

5. SCREAM QUEENS TEASER IS HERE!
Ryan Murphy (he of American Horror Story and Glee fame) has released the teaser trailer for his new series, Scream Queens, a horror-comedy starring none other than slasher movie icon Jamie Lee Curtis and AHS and Scream 4’s Emma Roberts.

6. NEW THIS WEEK

THE WEEK’S HORROR HEADLINES (12th-19th January 2015)

1. DETAILS EMERGE ON ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK AND POLTERGEIST REMAKES

We have news on two potentially massive remakes! First Fox have won a competitive bidding process to acquire the remake rights for John Carpenter's cult classic Escape From New York! Carpenter will retain an executive producer credit as the studio looks to launch a franchise. Could we see Escape From USA or Escape From Planet Earth in the future? Stay tuned!

Also Sam Rockwell has spilled some alarming details on the Poltergeist remake - noteably that the studio are shooting a kid's adventure movie. Thanks for ruining my day, Hollywood.

2. THE HOBBIT'S RICHARD ARMITAGE JOINS HANNIBAL – AS FRANCIS DOLARHYDE!

I love NBC's Hannibal. It's one of the best things on TV right now and it just continues to impress as it continues to draw from Thomas Harris' source material. So it's pretty safe to say that I was overjoyed to read confirmation that the Red Dragon portion of the story is drawing nearer. How do we know? Because Richard Armitage has been announced as joining the cast in the role of Francis Dolarhyde AKA deranged serial killer The Tooth Fairy. 

My initial thoughts are that he may be s little too good-looking for the role but he's a fine actor so consider me pleased!

3. MORE X-FILES ON THE WAY?

From one tv favourite to another! Following on from the success of the micro-series reboot of 24 last year, Fox has turned its eye to other screen favourites of yesteryear... and is in talks to bring back 90s cult phenomenon The X-Files! Holy shit!

It is very much at the logistics stage right now as talks are being made to ensure that stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, as well as show-runner Chrus Carter, can clear their schedules. With a huge storyline hanging over the show following its finale in xxxx, this is pretty much the news that the fans have been waiting for! X-cellent!

4. FOX’S SCREAM QUEEN CAST GROWS

Glee star Lea Michele, Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike XXL), Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) and Keke Palmer (Akeela and the Bee, Masters of Sex) will join Jamie Lee Curtis and Emma Roberts in Ryan Murphy’s horror-comedy anthology Scream Queens. These are some top quality names and the addition of Michele means that any musical numbers (such as those that have popped up throughout Murphy’s AWESOME American Horror Story: Freak Show) will be nothing short of brilliant. This is a series that I can’t wait to see!

5. CALL GIRL AVAILABLE ONLINE — TODAY!
Jill Sixx Gevargizian’s award winning short, Call Girl, starring the wonderful Laurence R Harvey and Tristan Risk is now available to watch for free over at Dreadcentral.com.

Call Girl has picked up plenty of short of the year awards and is one of the finest short films I've seen in some time, so stop mucking about, get over there and get watching!

You’ll be VERY glad you did.

6. NEW THIS WEEK

 

We’re into the late January dumping ground now so don’t expect too much for the next couple of weeks  First up we have House On The Hill, which is apparently based on the true story of serial killer Leonard Lake. I’ve no idea if it’s any good, but it is available at Amazon here.

We also have a creepy looking exorcism flick, Grace: The Possession (available here) and Rebecca Romijn’s Possessed by Evil (available here)

Finally, The Killjoy Collection is also out this week. I’ve only seen one Killjoy movie and it didn’t impress, but it clearly has a following as it has racked up three sequels. If you’re a fan, grab it right here.

1: JAMIE LEE CURTIS RETURNS TO HORROR

Jamie Lee Curtis has joined Emma Roberts (Scream 4 and American Horror Story) in AHS showrunner’s Ryan Murphy new Fox horror-comedy anthology series, Scream Queens.
The greatest Scream Queen of all time back in the genre at last! If this manages to combine the humour of Murphy’s Glee and the more gruesome scares of American Horror Story, I might actually be pretty interested!

2: NEW WOMAN IN BLACK 2 POSTER REVEALED

The follow-up to Hammer’s smash hit 2012 chiller The Woman in Black has unleashed a new, very creepy poster. The film will be in cinema’s next month, but apparently, she never left.

3: MRS VOORHEES RETURNS IN NEW FRIDAY THE 13TH

Pamela Voorhees will make an appearance in the new Friday the 13th film! Furthermore, it WILL be based in the 1980s and will receive an R rating in the United States!
I’m all for this, don’t mess with a formula that works. I just hope they consider talking to Betsy Palmer for an appearance...

4: KING KONG FILM RENAMED AND RESCHEDULED

Legendary Pictures has released some information regarding its new King Kong movie.  Formerly known as just Skull Island, the picture has been renamed Kong: Skull Island, while its release date has been pushed back to 10th March 2017. As Legendary’s Godzilla did pretty damn well at the box office, could we be seeing a modern day Kong vs Godzilla monster mash in the future?

5: MUCK HITS FUNDRAISING TARGET!

Last week I mentioned that Steve Wolsh’s indie horror throwback Muck was seeking funding to ensure that it’s prequel, Muck: Feast of St Patrick would be made. At the time, things were pretty tight… but it eventually smashed it’s $250,000 target!
Well done to everybody involved (including any backers who may have headed there from this blog!)
Now let’s enjoy that trailer again shall we?

6: NEW THIS WEEK

This week sees the long awaited limited edition blu-ray release of Jörg Buttgereit’s Nekromantik.  This version comes as a three-disc release with an INCREDIBLE amount of director approved special features. Get over to Amazon to grab it!

FEATURE: SINISTER SIX: SMASHING SCREAM QUEENS

With this week’s announcement that the wonderful Jamie Lee Curtis is heading back to her horror roots for Fox TV’s new horror-comedy, aptly titled Scream Queens, I thought it was time to check out some more of the genre’s iconic leading ladies.

From the slasher heyday of the late 70s-early 80s to today’s horror efforts, this doesn’t contain every single actress who deserves the title of Scream Queen, but it does contain some of the very best…

1: P.J. SOLES

(Carrie, Halloween, The Butterfly Room, The Devil’s Rejects)

One of Curtis’ Halloween co-stars, P.J. Soles’s Lynda fared less fortunately than Laurie Strode. Not just content with being ‘the one that went topless’ in Carpenter’s slasher classic, Soles also has a role in genre must-see, Carrie too! If that weren’t enough, in more recent years Soles has returned to horror with a string of roles. ‘FANTASTIC’.

2: LINNEA QUIGLEY

(Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Demons, Creepozoids, Sorority Babes at the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama, Silent Night Deadly Night, Pumpkinhead 2)

Ms Quigley is pretty much a living legend to me. Starring in dozens of cult-classics that will be all-too familiar to my fellow children of the Eighties, Quigley is one of the greatest and most prolific scream queens of all time. Known for her serious acting chops and willingness to bare her well-honed bod (she even released a horror work out tape!), Linnea was one of the first names on this list.

3: DEBBIE ROCHON

(Tromeo and Juliet, Santa Claws, Bleed, Terror Firmer, Dorchester’s Revenge: The Return of Crinoline Head)

Equally prolific in her horror and cult film appearances, the feisty and tough Rochon became a mainstay of Troma films during the Nineties. Completely and utterly embracing her role as a horror icon, Rochon has appeared in dozens of horror films and a quick look at her imdb page shows PLENTY more on the way. A genuinely great actress, she elevates films just through appearing in them. Ms Rochon, I salute you.

4: NEVE CAMPBELL

(The Craft, Scream, Scream II, Scream III, Scream IV)

While the quantity of Neve Campbell’s horror output can’t touch that of Quigley, Soles or Rochon, the importance of her work cannot be understated. As the lead star in Scream, the film that single-handedly resurrected the horror genre in 1996, she became a superstar scream queen. A talented actress, she became the face of one of the biggest horror franchises of all time and earned a place on this list.

5: BARBARA CRAMPTON

(Re-Animator, From Beyond, Castle Freak, You’re Next, Chopping Mall, Lords of Salem)

Clearly a firm favourite with director Stuart Gordon, Barbara Crampton has appeared in a number of his films, not least of which the ever-popular (and awesome), Re-Animator. Along with roles in Gordon's Lovecraftian From Beyond and Castle Freak, Crampton also appeared in campy-classic Chopping Mall. Furthermore, she has returned to the genre in recent years, notably in Adam Wingard's superb You're Next. Vivacious and clearly game to get her hands (and other body parts) dirty, Crampton is a top drawer Scream Queen.

6: DANIELLE HARRIS

(Halloween 4, Halloween 5, Hatchet 2, Hatchet 3, Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2, See No Evil 2, Urban Legends, Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet, Halloween 2007, Stake Land)

Danielle Harris is THE reigning Scream Queen today. Don’t believe me? Look at that filmography. After appearing in the original Halloween franchise, Harris took a short break rom horror before returning with a bang. She took over the lead role in both of the Hatchet sequels, the lead in the Soska sisters’ See No Evil 2, returned to Halloween franchise in Rob Zombie’s remakes and is appearing in genre film after genre film. The pretty, pint-sized sparkplug is EVERYTHING that a modern scream queen should be, showing an impressive versatility in her roles and terrific pride in the genre. Danielle is not just the top reigning Scream Queen, she is one of the best ever.
