RAW REVIEW: THE CONJURING 2

I’m a big fan of James Wan. The likeable, enthusiastic, diminutive director always impresses, from his trendsetting Saw to the rebirth of the haunted house genre, Insidious and its sequel. I honestly believe that he’s well on his way to becoming this generation’s John Carpenter.
I also really enjoyed the first Conjuring movie, which meant this film had pretty big shoes to fill.
So would it enchant me?
Or would this outing spell disaster?
Read on...

The Conjuring 2 (2016)

Dir: James Wan
Starring: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmigia, Frances O’Connor, Madison Wolfe, Lauren Esposito, Patrick McAuley, Benjamin Haigh, Franke Potente, Simon McBurney

SPEEDY SYNOPSIS: I’ll try not to spoil too much here but read on at your own risk.

James Wan returns to the story of real life ghost hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmigia) as they investigate ‘England’s Amityville’ — the infamous Enfield Poltergeist, a sinister supernatural presence that victimised a normal family, the Hodgsons  in 1977.
When a restless spirit makes its presence known to young Janet (Madison Wolfe); her siblings Margaret (Lauren Esposito), Johnny (Patrick McAuley) and Billy (Benjamin Haigh); and long-suffering mother Peggy (Frances O’Connor), they come to the attention of psychic researchers Maurice Grosse (an unrecognisable Simon McBurney) and sceptical Anita Gregory (Franke Potente).
Stateside the case is referred to the Catholic Church, which sends Ed and a battle-weary Lorraine to assess whether this is a genuine case.
But how safe are they all — especially as Lorraine is haunted by a terrible vision depicting Ed’s violent death…

THE BEST BITS (mild spoiler warning): Let's cut straight to the chase — I’m delighted to say that The Conjuring 2 is a more than worthy sequel to the great first outing. It may even surpass the original film and totally washes away the bad-taste left in the mouth by 2014’s derivative, soulless spin-off Annabelle.
The cast impress in their roles, especially the sparkling central duo of Farmigia and Wilson. They are a fantastic screen couple with real chemistry and both show impressive acting chops as they bring their real-life counterparts to life. Wilson really is a fine leading man and once again his strong relationship with Wan yields dividends.
Fans of TV’s Bates Motel already know that Farmigia is an exceptional actress and she brings an impressive blend of warmth, vulnerability and steely toughness to her portrayal of Lorraine. It’s in their scenes together that they really shine, with a strong and believable rapport. Here’s hoping to more films of the Warren’s cases — perhaps more of the case covered at the start of the film, a case GUARANTEED to bring the horror crowds flocking.
However, these stars do take something of a back seat for the first act, so it’s a good thing that the actors playing the Hodgson family are so good. Sure, as somebody who lives a mere 25 minutes from the real Green Street, I did notice a couple of wobbly accents from some of the younger stars but they soon settle down. Elsewhere McBurney is excellent as Grosse and really could have done with more to do. Still, what we do get is fantastic.
The Hodgsons all impress, especially the great O’Connor, and we can’t help but find ourselves drawn into their plight, which is real testament to their performances.
It helps that the frights come thick and fast, with an early scene that pretty much lays the groundwork for every terrifying setpiece to come leading to some chilling payoffs. The scenes with young Billy’s tent and The Crooked Man zoetrope (a toy every bit as a ridiculously unsuitable for children as the Annabelle doll of the previous instalment) are standouts, while a scene in the Warren family home involving a Marilyn Manson-like demonic nun is a show-stealer.
Director Wan’s timing during these (and the myriad of other scares) is impeccable, while the flashy camerawork on display throughout shows plenty of creativity. Elsewhere there is some excellent effects work for the key ghouls and ghosts of the story. The restless spirit of Bill Wilkins is a little underwhelming but a certain long-legged, bowler-hatted entity is sure to get lots of love from horror fans while the profain nun is genuinely disturbing at times, especially during THAT intense scene.
This isn’t the only visual element to impress. The cinematography by Don Burgess adds creepy atmosphere and, when combined with the stunning period set dressing, really encompasses the gritty, grimy feel of the Seventies. It looks great throughout, and even the overdose of British Rain™ doesn't feel too much. Instead it adds to the atmosphere, as does the clever decision to play up the spookiness of the Christmas setting with plenty of eerie choir recitations of Christmas carols.
Clearly the whole film is a labour of love — you get the impression that James Wan and his cast and crew really care about doing this story and its characters justice… and scaring the living daylights out of us along the way.

THE WORST BITS (mild spoiler warning): Unfortunately, the main criticism I can level towards The Conjuring 2 is that Wan may be a little too invested in the characters as written by him and collaborators Carey and Chad Hayes, expecting us to share his affection towards them. This leads to a couple of overly sentimental scenes that veer perilously close to schmaltzy at times (a mid-movie sing-along is especially cloying, even if it does highlight a superb period soundtrack). There are some decidedly soppy conversations that may cause eye-rolling from some viewers.
Ultimately however, this is a price I’m prepared to pay for the chance to watch a horror film with genuine heart rather than mindless, inferior knock-offs and cash-ins.
Another problem I had with the film, albeit a rather minor one, was the manner in which the real-life major investigators of the phenomena at Green Street, Maurice Grosse and especially Guy Lyon Playfair, are marginalised in favour of the more glamorous Americans. Perhaps it’s because I was spoiled by Sky One’s exceptional drama, The Enfield Haunting, earlier this year, but it meant that fascinating personalities such as Maurice Grosse are given short shift. In real life his obsession with the paranormal was driven by the tragic loss of his young daughter, also named Janet. In this film that motive is touched upon very briefly in a single throwaway scene, then promptly discarded (along with Grosse himself) for the fast-paced climax.
Of course, this is a work of entertainment, a horror film not an extensively researched documentary, so in that regard perhaps these decisions can be excused, and not only that, it's a sequel to an established title so of course the stars of the previous film will be given more coverage. It’s just a shame because in terms of drama I feel a lot could have been mined from these characters.

VERDICT: It may have a couple of very minor flaws, but with The Conjuring 2 the brilliant Wan shows us all exactly what he brings to the table — skilled and reverential horror direction — and it is bloody impressive. Here’s hoping that this is just the latest chapter in a long-running franchise from this talented group of film-makers. Highly, highly recommended.

The Conjuring 2 hits UK cinemas next Friday, 10 June. Until then check out the film’s Facebook page for more information.

ALL THE WEEK'S HORROR HEADLINES (27th April–4th May)

Not got time to trawl the web for all the top horror news of the last week? Well allow me to give you a bite-size breakdown of the all biggest nightmarish news!

1. IT REMAKE CLOSE TO FINDING A PENNYWISE

New Line's upcoming two-part movie adaption of Stephen King's It has found its Pennywise!
Variety is reporting that that 22-year-old Will Poutler of We're The Millers is close to signing on for the role. I feel sorry for Poulter, following in Tim Curry's enormous footsteps in his iconic work as the killer clown is an unenviable task.

2. MORE NAMES ATTACHED TO LEATHERFACE

With Angela Bettis and Stephen Dorff already attached to the Texas Chain Saw Massacre prequel, the last few days have revealed even more casting details.
Bloody Disgusting has claimed that Sam Coleman has joined the cast as Bud, another potential young Leatherface. Read their story here.
Elsewhere, The Wrap has reported that Mr Selfridge actress Jessica Madsen is also onboard. Read the story here.
Finally, and this is a big one, Bloody Disgusting is claiming that star of The Haunting and The Conjuring, the excellent Lili Taylor is also joining the movie. This is fantastic news, Taylor is awesome. Full story here.

3. GLEN MORGAN AND JAMES WONG TO RETURN TO THE X-FILES

Arguably the greatest creative team during The X-Files' initial run, Glen Morgan and James Wong will return for the show's resurrection. Morgan and Wong are the men who brought us the most disturbing episode of the show ever, Home, and also worked on Chris Carter's Millennium. Wong also brought us the first Final Destination movie. As a fan of their work, this really has made my day.

4. NEW POLTERGEIST TRAILER

The remake is drawing closer...

5. A FOURTH NIGHT AT FREDDY'S

Scott Cawthon's web site, Scottgames has revealed the above teaser image, which suggest that Five Nights At Freddy's 4: The Final Chapter will arrive this Halloween! Will we finally discover the epic truth about the events at Fazbear's pizzeria? Who/what the hell was the purple guy? Will we all find ourselves jumping out of our seats and swearing at our monitors?
I'm guessing yes to all three...

6. NEW RELEASES

First up this week, we have The Asylum, a cool looking exorcism flick directed by Marcus Nispel (director of the surprisingly enjoyable Friday the 13th and Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes). I'm intrigued! Buy it at Amazon here.
Also out this week we have World War Dead – Rise Of The Fallen. You can't go wrong with a good zombie soldier flick and this looks like a decent one. Buy it Amazon here.
I'll be honest, this next one sounds so batshit that I NEED to see it. It's a slasher film set in Seventies New York featuring a serial killer who goes on murderous rampages every time he hears Disco music. Incredible. It's called Discopath and I demand that you buy it at Amazon here.

HORROR HEADLINES (30th March–6th April)

Not got time to trawl the web for all the top horror news of the last week? Well allow me to give you a bite-size breakdown of the all biggest nightmarish news!

1. SINISTER 2 IMAGES HIT THE WEB

I loved 2012's Sinister, so I'm very excited to see this slew of images (and the very creepy logo above) from the upcoming sequel. The film will be in cinemas from 21st August.

2. SKINNER AND CIGARETTE SMOKING MAN BACK FOR X-FILES

It's not just David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson that are returning for the new X-Files. On the David Letterman Show, Duchovny revealed that Mitch Pileggi and William B Davis will join them!
You can watch the video over at Dread Central here.

3. FIRST STILL FROM ZOMBIE’S 31

Want to know what Richard Brake looks like as Doom-Head in Zombie's upcoming 'killer-clown game at Halloween' movie?
Well, that. Yikes.

4. POSTERS FOR POLTERGEIST AND ASH VS EVIL DEAD

Speaking of terrifying clowns..
Also, behold the awesome!

5. MANIAC COP’S ROBERT Z'DAR PASSES AWAY

I was very sad last Wednesday to hear that cult actor Robert Z'Dar had passed away aged 64. Z'Dar was perhaps best known for his work in Maniac Cop and Tango & Cash. He was fantastic in all of them.
R.I.P. Robert

6. NEW RELEASES

The biggest UK home release this week HAS to be Exists, the Sasquatch-ploitation Found Footage flick from The Blair Witch Project's Eduardo Sanchez.
Is it any good? MY REVIEW says so! Buy it on Amazon here.

THE WEEK’S HORROR HEADLINES (2nd–9th February)

Not got time to trawl the web for all the top horror news of the last week? Well allow me to give you a bite-size breakdown of the all biggest nightmarish news!

1. POLTERGEIST REMAKE PICS AND TRAILER HIT THE INTERNET

Whatever your thoughts on remaking a legitimates genre classic, those pics are kind of cool. And the clown jump in the trailer below is GOOD STUFF!

2. POSTER SPILLS DETAILS ON REMAKE OF MARTYRS

Pascal Laugier’s 2009 extreme horror hit, Martyrs, is widely regarded as one of the most gruelling, disturbing flicks of all-time. So I remain sceptical as to whether Blumhouse Productions’ and The Safran Company’s remake — now revealed to be helmed by the Goetz brothers — can top it to take the title of ‘The Ultimate Horror Movie’. Hmmmm, let’s wait and see shall we?

3. HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN TO STAR IN WARTIME HORROR UNTÖT

So it seems that the Star Wars prequels’ Hayden Christensen will battle Nazi zombies in Untöt.
Produced by Solaris Entertainment, the synopsis reads:
UNTÖT, meaning "undead" in German, is set towards the end of World War II in December 1944. During a blizzard, an elite military unit headed by Lt. Fredrick Hank (Christensen), is dropped behind enemy lines in the mountains of Poland to destroy a secret Nazi weapons facility. The soldiers must face their greatest fears when they encounter something they could never have been trained for. The undead.
I love a good wartime horror flick, so maybe this will deliver? Stay tuned…
Read Twitchfilm’s story here.

4. FIRST IMAGE FROM BIG SCREEN ADAPTATION OF STEPHEN KING’S CELL

How’s that for a cast? Samuel L Jackson and John Cusack reunite in a Stephen King adaptation (they first appeared together in 1408) along with Orphan’s Isabelle Fuhrman (yes, that really is her. Yes, she really has grown up!)
I was a big fan of Cell (not much of a shock to regular readers, my love of King is pretty common knowledge!), I thought it felt a lot like James Herbert’s twisted The Fog crossed with KIng’s own The Stand, so I’m looking forward to this!

5. M NIGHT SHYAMALAN WRITING A NEW SUPERNATURAL THRILLER

M Night Shyamalan’s early efforts were some of my favourite flicks of the new millennium. So I’m still kind of hopeful that he can rediscover that form with a lower budget genre effort. Bloody Disgusting has spoken to the man and learnt that even though his intriguing next movie, The Visit, hasn’t hit our screens yet, he’s already hard at work on another ‘small scary thriller’. Fingers crossed it’s more The Sixth Sense than Last Airbender…
Read Bloody-Disgusting’s story here.

6: NEW THIS WEEK

Two big ones get a home release this week. Jake Gyllenhall’s critically acclaimed Enemy (get it here) and Luke Evans’ Dracula Untold (available here). Let me know if you check either of them out, I’d be interested to hear your thought!

THE WEEK’S HORROR HEADLINES (12th-19th January 2015)

Not got time to trawl the web for all the top horror news of the last week? Well allow me to give you a bite-size breakdown of the all biggest nightmarish news!

1. DETAILS EMERGE ON ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK AND POLTERGEIST REMAKES

We have news on two potentially massive remakes! First Fox have won a competitive bidding process to acquire the remake rights for John Carpenter's cult classic Escape From New York! Carpenter will retain an executive producer credit as the studio looks to launch a franchise. Could we see Escape From USA or Escape From Planet Earth in the future? Stay tuned!
Also Sam Rockwell has spilled some alarming details on the Poltergeist remake - noteably that the studio are shooting a kid's adventure movie. Thanks for ruining my day, Hollywood.

2. THE HOBBIT'S RICHARD ARMITAGE JOINS HANNIBAL – AS FRANCIS DOLARHYDE!

I love NBC's Hannibal. It's one of the best things on TV right now and it just continues to impress as it continues to draw from Thomas Harris' source material. So it's pretty safe to say that I was overjoyed to read confirmation that the Red Dragon portion of the story is drawing nearer. How do we know? Because Richard Armitage has been announced as joining the cast in the role of Francis Dolarhyde AKA deranged serial killer The Tooth Fairy.
My initial thoughts are that he may be s little too good-looking for the role but he's a fine actor so consider me pleased!

3. MORE X-FILES ON THE WAY?

From one tv favourite to another! Following on from the success of the micro-series reboot of 24 last year, Fox has turned its eye to other screen favourites of yesteryear... and is in talks to bring back 90s cult phenomenon The X-Files! Holy shit!
It is very much at the logistics stage right now as talks are being made to ensure that stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, as well as show-runner Chrus Carter, can clear their schedules. With a huge storyline hanging over the show following its finale in xxxx, this is pretty much the news that the fans have been waiting for! X-cellent!
Read Deadline’s story here.

4. FOX’S SCREAM QUEEN CAST GROWS

Glee star Lea Michele, Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike XXL), Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) and Keke Palmer (Akeela and the Bee, Masters of Sex) will join Jamie Lee Curtis and Emma Roberts in Ryan Murphy’s horror-comedy anthology Scream Queens. These are some top quality names and the addition of Michele means that any musical numbers (such as those that have popped up throughout Murphy’s AWESOME American Horror Story: Freak Show) will be nothing short of brilliant. This is a series that I can’t wait to see!

Read Variety’s story here.

5. CALL GIRL AVAILABLE ONLINE — TODAY!

Jill Sixx Gevargizian’s award winning short, Call Girl, starring the wonderful Laurence R Harvey and Tristan Risk is now available to watch for free over at Dreadcentral.com.
Call Girl has picked up plenty of short of the year awards and is one of the finest short films I've seen in some time, so stop mucking about, get over there and get watching!
You’ll be VERY glad you did.

6. NEW THIS WEEK

We’re into the late January dumping ground now so don’t expect too much for the next couple of weeks  First up we have House On The Hill, which is apparently based on the true story of serial killer Leonard Lake. I’ve no idea if it’s any good, but it is available at Amazon here.
We also have a creepy looking exorcism flick, Grace: The Possession (available here) and Rebecca Romijn’s Possessed by Evil (available here)
Finally, The Killjoy Collection is also out this week. I’ve only seen one Killjoy movie and it didn’t impress, but it clearly has a following as it has racked up three sequels. If you’re a fan, grab it right here.
