ALL THE WEEK'S HORROR HEADLINES (18th–25th May)

Not got time to trawl the web for all the top horror news of the last week? Well allow me to give you a bite-size breakdown of the all biggest nightmarish news!

1. ROGERS JOINS ASH VS THE EVIL DEAD

Mimi Rogers is joining the cast of Starz's Ash vs The Evil Dead! She will feature alongside Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless in Sam Raimi's TV adaptation of his hit movie series.

2. PLATINUM DUNES SPILL ON FRIDAY THE 13TH

Platinum Dunes' Brad Fuller gives us an update on the new Friday the 13th film — including that it WON'T be found footage after all! I don't hate the FF sub-genre yet, so that wouldn't have been a deal breaker, but I'm glad to hear that they are listening to fan feedback.

3. KIRKMAN TALKS FEAR THE WALKING DEAD

4. GEORGE A ROMERO/MARVEL ZOMBIE TV SHOW!

If The Walking Dead doesn't sate your appetite for shuffling undead on the tellybox, you'll be delighted to hear that Demarest is producing a TV adaption of Marvel's Empire of the Dead, penned by no-other than grandfather of the zombie genre George A Romero himself.

5. TWIN PEAKS SEASON GROWS!

Last week I reported that David Lynch WOULD be returning with a new season of Twin Peaks... and now I'm happy to say that he's revealed the season order has been doubled from nine to EIGHTEEN episodes!!!!

6. NEW RELEASES

THE big release this week is the critically acclaimed, groundbreaking, Lovecraftian romantic horror — Spring. You need to watch this, so buy it Amazon here.

Also this week genre fans can look forward to the release of British zombie film, Darkest Day. Always good to support UK filmmakers, so buy it at Amazon here.

If that isn't enough End of the World entertainment for you, this week also sees Goodbye World hit the DVD shelves. Buy it at Amazon here.

HORROR HEADLINES (23rd-30th March)

Not got time to trawl the web for all the top horror news of the last week? Well allow me to give you a bite-size breakdown of the all biggest nightmarish news!

1. SIX MORE X-FILES ON THE WAY

It's confirmed! Six more episodes of The X-Files are coming to Fox, with both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning in the iconic roles of Mulder and Scully. Original show runner Chris Carter will oversee the production. First Twin Peaks, now this? AMAZING!

2. SCHWARZENEGGER'S MAGGIE GETS A TRAILER

The Austrian Oak's long-awaited zombie movie finally gets a trailer... and the Big Man is not so wooden in this. Pathos, zombies and Arnie's beard. This has it all!

3. WALKING DEAD SPIN-OFF TITLE REVEALED

The Walking Dead's LA-based spin-off will officially be called… (drumroll please) Fear The Walking Dead! A bit longwinded perhaps, but pretty cool.

4. FRIDAY THE 13th LANDS HANNIBAL WRITER

Nick Antosca, writer for NBC's wonderful Hannibal, has signed up to write the new Friday the 13th movie for Platinum Dunes/Paramount Pictures.

5. AMC's PREACHER FINDS ITS CASSIDY

Joseph Gilgun of Misfits and This Is England fame has been cast as Cassidy in AMC's Preacher. He's a wonderful actor and is PERFECT for the role, so I'm very excited by this news!

6. NEW RELEASES

SINISTER SIX: GREATEST JASON VOORHEES KILLS

This Friday will be the 13th of February.
Need I say more? I do? Okay, how about ki-ki-ki ma-ma-ma?
It’s time to celebrate one of the greatest screen boogeymen of all time, Mrs Voorhees’ beautiful, bouncing baby boy Jason! 
One of the more imaginative slashers, Jason has had some real high-points when it comes to the techniques he’s used to dispatch of the gormless teens that — despite a deathrate in the area to rival Pompeii — continue to flock to the shores of Camp Crystal Lake.
Now, I’m including those deaths caused by Jason himself, so the iconic Kevin Bacon throat stabbing doesn’t make the list, nor do any from A New Beginning. Here are six of my very favourites!

6. THE BIG FREEZE
Jason X, 2002
Who: Adrienne (Kristi Angus)

Jason X seems to be a polarising horror flick (personally, I dug it!) but one thing is for sure: EVERYBODY has to admit that the gruesome manner in which Jason disposes of teaching assistant Adrienne is a showstopper. After she attempts to perform an autopsy on the seemingly dead Voorhees, he springs to life and thrusts her face into a vat of liquid nitrogen, instantly freezing her face and head, before smashing her crystallised head against a stainless steel work service and callously throwing her headless body to the floor.
The scene is helped by the incredible special effects on display (which far surpass most Friday the 13th offerings) and re-establishes the freshly thawed out Voorhees as every bit as mean as he ever was.

5. BOXING BEHEADAL
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, 1989
Who: Julius, V.C. Dupree

Coming in the slightly misleading Jason Takes Manhattan (misleading because the big guy only spends the vast majority of the flick on a boat before spending a mere 10 minutes in NYC!), the Jason v Julius showdown is a classic Ft13 moment.

Impressive athlete and boxer Julius survives the bloodbath on the boat, but finds himself among the survivors stalked through the streets of the Big Apple by Voorhees. Separated from the group and cornered on a rooftop, He realises that flight is not an option... So Julius turns to fight.

He unleashes a volley of powerful blows at Jason but, after wearing himself out as he wails away at the unphased Voorhees, he gasps: 'Take your best shot, motherfucker...' To which Jason responds with a single haymaker so powerful it tears Julius' head clean from his body and down into the alleyway below.

This great gag is then followed by an amazing punchline - the head bounces down into an awaiting dumpster which promptly slams shut on it. Sheer poetry!

4. BEDBREAKER
Freddy vs Jason, 2003

Who: Trey (Jesse Hutch)

There are few Voorhees victims as instantly unlikeable as misogynistic tool Trey. After witnessing the callous way in which he treats cute girlfriend Gibb (the always wonderful Katharine Isabelle) post-coitus, we are itching to see him get his just desserts — and boy does Jason deliver. As Trey reclines facedown on a folding campbed (classy), Voorhees proceeds to brutally stab him over and over in the spine with his trademark, over-sized machete. This is pretty much already an awesome death, but what happens next propels it into legendary status.
Jason folds the bed, with Trey still in it. I’m talking full-on, calf-to-shoulder, spine-snapping folding here. Ooooooh.
This one narrowly edges out a similar folding incident from the heroic Sheriff Garris (David Kagen) in Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI. After pulling a Julius (see above) and trying to throwdown with the big J, Garris ends up getting the origami treatment too…

3. VAN VIOLENCE
Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI, 1986
Who: Nikki (Darcy DeMoss)

While Garris’s death in Jason Lives didn’t quite make the list, this one certainly does. After teens Nikki and Cort (Tom Fridley) decide to indulge in some hankypanky in her stepfather‘s RV they are interrupted when the power goes out. Upon discovering that the cord was intentionally cut, they decide to get the hell out of dodge and Cort burns rubber with the radio blaring.
Little do he and Nikki know that they have a stowaway. Cue Jason, who grabs Nikki by the head and mashes into the wall so hard that it leaves a visible impression of her face on the outside of the van.
This is made all the cooler by the fact that it is set to Alice Cooper’s Teenage Frankenstein. Awesome.

2. HANDSTAND HORROR
Friday the 13th Part 3, 1982
Who: Andy (Jeffrey Rogers)

Andy is a bit of a twat. He spends pretty much his entire time in the third Friday outing trying to impress people with his circus skills, such as juggling and tumbling. It is this last one that brings about his grisly demise. After bedding his girlfriend Debbie (Tracie Savage) he walks on his hands into the bathroom where she's showering to ask if she wants a beer. He then walks out of the room (still on his hands) right into Jason — who proceeds to bring his machete down between Andy’s legs, splitting him to the gizzard via the johnson.
Ooof!
A marvellously gory and surprisingly entertaining end, which is only made stronger by the reveal of his mangled remains in the rafters later on in the flick.

1. SLEEPING BAG SLAMMER
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, 1988
Who: Judy (Debora Kessler)

This one is a kill SO iconic that the series has acknowledged and revisited it (albeit with some subtle tweaks) TWICE. In this genuinely brilliant scene, Judy has gone camping with her boyfriend Dan (Michael Schroeder). After they Dan pops out, Judy undresses in anticipation of his return. As she hears a figure approach, she assumes it to be Dan and calls out… to be met by a machete ripping through the side of the tent. She screams and desperately tries to hide inside her sleeping bag.
WORST. MOVE. EVER.
Jason proceeds to grab the bag, drag her outside, then, in one of the man’s most surprising, simultaneously brutal AND hilarious moments, violently swings the bag into a tree.
This is a kill so great I NEEDED to add a video clip.
Both the virtual reality segment of Jason X AND the 2009 remake paid homage to this death, as if confirming what I knew all along — this truly is the greatest Friday the 13th kill EVER.

2. GHOSTBUSTERS GIRLS CLOSE TO CONFIRMED

Melissa McCarthy has reportedly signed on for Paul Feig’s new Ghostbusters flick and Sony is now said to be negotiating with Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.
I can’t say I’m too impressed at this news, but we have some highly-regarded comedy actresses here so I’m prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt, even though nobody could ever take the place of Venkman, Stantz, Spengler and Zeddemore in my heart.

3. TURBO KID TRAILER SKIDS STRAIGHT INTO OUR HEARTS

4. NEW RELEASE DATES FOR FRIDAY THE 13TH, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE GHOST DIMENSION AND RINGS

Shuffles on the release dates of three massive upcoming horror movies. The latest film in the Paranormal Activity franchise has been pushed back to the more traditional Halloween slot, with Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension now set to hit screens on 23rd October. The Ring reboot, Rings is now scheduled for a 13th November release date. And finally, the latest Friday the 13th flick has been bumped all the way back to 13th May next year. Unlucky for some, indeed…

5. ANGELICA TRAILER BRINGS THE VICTORIAN SPOOKINESS BY THE TRUCKLOAD

A trailer for Victorian set horror film Angelica has hit the web. Based on a novel by Arthur Phillips, directed by Teeth’s Mitchell Lichtenstein and starring The Hunger Games’ Jena Malone, this looks a great, atmospheric chiller packed with tonnes of repressed sexuality and creepiness.

6. NEW THIS WEEK

 

There are some interesting looking dvds hitting shelves this week. First up, spooky tale Jessabelle, about a woman who finds herself haunted upon returning to her childhood home. It’s available at Amazon here.

1: JAMIE LEE CURTIS RETURNS TO HORROR

Jamie Lee Curtis has joined Emma Roberts (Scream 4 and American Horror Story) in AHS showrunner’s Ryan Murphy new Fox horror-comedy anthology series, Scream Queens.
The greatest Scream Queen of all time back in the genre at last! If this manages to combine the humour of Murphy’s Glee and the more gruesome scares of American Horror Story, I might actually be pretty interested!

2: NEW WOMAN IN BLACK 2 POSTER REVEALED

The follow-up to Hammer’s smash hit 2012 chiller The Woman in Black has unleashed a new, very creepy poster. The film will be in cinema’s next month, but apparently, she never left.
Brrrrrrrrrr!

3: MRS VOORHEES RETURNS IN NEW FRIDAY THE 13TH

Pamela Voorhees will make an appearance in the new Friday the 13th film! Furthermore, it WILL be based in the 1980s and will receive an R rating in the United States!
I’m all for this, don’t mess with a formula that works. I just hope they consider talking to Betsy Palmer for an appearance...

4: KING KONG FILM RENAMED AND RESCHEDULED

Legendary Pictures has released some information regarding its new King Kong movie.  Formerly known as just Skull Island, the picture has been renamed Kong: Skull Island, while its release date has been pushed back to 10th March 2017. As Legendary’s Godzilla did pretty damn well at the box office, could we be seeing a modern day Kong vs Godzilla monster mash in the future?

5: MUCK HITS FUNDRAISING TARGET!

Last week I mentioned that Steve Wolsh’s indie horror throwback Muck was seeking funding to ensure that it’s prequel, Muck: Feast of St Patrick would be made. At the time, things were pretty tight… but it eventually smashed it’s $250,000 target!
Well done to everybody involved (including any backers who may have headed there from this blog!)
Now let’s enjoy that trailer again shall we?

6: NEW THIS WEEK

This week sees the long awaited limited edition blu-ray release of Jörg Buttgereit’s Nekromantik.  This version comes as a three-disc release with an INCREDIBLE amount of director approved special features. Get over to Amazon to grab it!
